THE BIRTH OF MARY, MOTHER OF JESUS

The Birth of Mary According to the Visions of Anne Catherine Emmerich

In her visions, Emmerich described the days leading up to the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary. According to the account, Saint Anne sensed that the time of her child’s birth was near and invited close relatives to be present. Among them were her sister Maraha, the widow Enue, and her niece Mary Salome.

The household prepared quietly and reverently. Joachim arranged offerings of thanksgiving and entrusted the home to family members. The atmosphere, as described in the vision, was one of prayerful expectation.

Emmerich recounts that during the night, Anne gathered the women for prayer. The vision describes symbolic imagery associated with biblical themes — references to the promises made to Abraham and the prophetic signs of salvation history. In deeply symbolic language, Anne is portrayed as praying in thanksgiving for the fulfillment of God’s promises.

The birth itself is described in mystical imagery. Emmerich recounts seeing radiant light fill the room and perceiving biblical symbolism reminiscent of the burning bush of Moses. The newborn child, Mary, is presented as a gift received in prayer and gratitude.

The women present expressed joy and reverence, offering hymns of praise. According to the vision, angels were perceived as proclaiming glory to God. The child was wrapped and laid beside her mother, and word of the birth spread among neighbors, who were moved by what they believed to be a sign of divine favor.

The vision concludes with scenes of thanksgiving and quiet wonder at the long-awaited birth of Anne’s child after years of childlessness.

Reflection

Accounts such as these belong to the rich tradition of Catholic devotional literature. While private revelations are not part of the deposit of faith, they have historically inspired meditation on the mysteries of salvation and the providence of God.

The Nativity of Mary invites the faithful to reflect on humility, preparation, and trust in God’s promises. The symbolic imagery in these visions emphasizes not spectacle, but gratitude and hope.
