The Creation of Mary’s Soul According to Anne Catherine Emmerich
The Creation of the Soul of the Blessed Virgin Mary
A Devotional Account from the Visions of Anne Catherine Emmerich
In her visions, Anne Catherine Emmerich described being shown a profound mystery concerning the creation of the soul of the Blessed Virgin Mary and its union with her body.
She perceived what she often described as the representation of the Most Holy Trinity in glory. In this vision, the divine majesty appeared to her in a symbolic form — at once resembling a vast radiant mountain and yet also suggesting a majestic human figure. From within this brilliance, she saw a movement, as though a living light arose from its very center. This light seemed to ascend and then proceed outward like a shining breath or luminous ray.
She then beheld this radiant brightness standing before the divine presence. It appeared distinct, yet entirely dependent upon God. She described seeing it take on form — though she understood that this shaping was not self-formed but entirely the result of the divine will. The light gradually assumed the likeness of a human soul, resplendent in a beauty beyond ordinary description.
Emmerich related that the beauty of this soul was shown to the angels, and that they rejoiced with extraordinary joy at its radiance. She struggled to express in words what she saw, indicating that earthly language could not adequately capture the spiritual reality revealed to her.
The Union of Soul and Body
Later in the vision, Emmerich described a moment during the pregnancy of Saint Anne. She indicated that seventeen weeks and five days had passed since the conception of the child — a time just before the midpoint of Anne’s pregnancy.
She saw Saint Anne resting quietly in her home near Nazareth. While Anne lay asleep, a radiant light appeared above her. From this heavenly brightness, a ray descended and entered her side, portrayed in the form of a small shining human figure.
At that same moment, Anne seemed to awaken in a state of ecstasy, surrounded by light. In the vision, she perceived her womb symbolically opening like a tabernacle prepared to receive a sacred presence. Within this sacred imagery, Emmerich understood that this was the moment in which the soul of the child was united to her body.
She described this event in deeply symbolic terms, suggesting that this child — destined for a singular role in salvation history — was uniquely prepared by divine grace.
Anne then rose from her couch and, filled with reverent joy, clothed herself and went to share the experience with Joachim. Together, they gave thanks to God. Emmerich saw them praying beneath a tree in their garden — the same place where, in earlier visions, Anne had received comfort and assurance.
Symbolic Timing and Meaning
In the course of the vision, Emmerich stated that it was made known to her that the soul of the Blessed Virgin was united to her body earlier than is typical in ordinary human development. She also described the birth as occurring somewhat earlier than expected.
These details were presented not as biological explanation, but as part of the symbolic and theological language of the vision — emphasizing the uniqueness of Mary’s role in the divine plan.
Reflection
This devotional account seeks to express, through imagery and symbolism, the belief in the singular grace given to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The vision uses poetic and mystical language to convey theological truths that Catholics contemplate with reverence.
Private revelations such as those attributed to Anne Catherine Emmerich are not part of the deposit of faith. However, they have historically served as meditative aids, inviting the faithful to reflect more deeply on divine providence and the mystery of God’s preparation of souls.
At the heart of this account lies a profound spiritual theme: that every human soul is created by God, willed into existence in love, and called to communion with Him. In the case of the Blessed Virgin, the vision portrays this mystery in a uniquely radiant and symbolic way.
