MARY'S CHARITY TOWARDS HER NEIGHBOUR
The life of the Blessed Virgin Mary offers a profound example of charity — a love that is attentive, generous, and responsive to the needs of others. Her charity was not passive or distant, but active and deeply rooted in her relationship with God.
In the Gospel, we see that Mary’s concern for others often appeared quietly, yet powerfully.
Mary’s Charity at Cana
At the Wedding Feast of Cana, Mary noticed a difficulty before it was openly expressed. Seeing that the hosts had run out of wine, she brought the situation to Jesus:
“They have no wine” (John 2:3).
Her words are simple, yet they reflect attentiveness and compassion. She did not wait to be asked, but responded to the need she perceived. In doing so, she entrusted the situation to her Son.
This moment reveals an important aspect of charity: it is often expressed in small, thoughtful acts of care.
Mary’s Visit to Elizabeth
Another example of Mary’s charity is found in her visit to her cousin Elizabeth. Upon learning of Elizabeth’s situation, Mary set out without delay:
“She went with haste into the hill country” (Luke 1:39).
This journey required effort and sacrifice, yet Mary undertook it willingly. Her visit was not merely social; it was an act of service, presence, and encouragement.
Charity, in this sense, involves giving time, energy, and attention to others, especially when they are in need.
Charity Rooted in God
Spiritual writers have reflected on Mary’s life as one of deep love for God, expressed through her openness to His will. Her acceptance of God’s plan at the Annunciation ultimately made possible the coming of Christ into the world.
In this way, her love for God and her love for others are inseparably connected. True charity flows from a heart that is united with God.
Charity and Daily Life
Mary’s example invites believers to practice charity in everyday situations. This includes:
- Noticing the needs of others
- Responding with kindness and generosity
- Offering support through presence and action
- Acting without seeking recognition
Charity is often expressed through simple gestures — a word of encouragement, a helping hand, or a willingness to listen.
The Teaching of the Gospel
The Gospel consistently emphasizes the importance of mercy and compassion. Jesus teaches:
“Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36).
This call to mercy is reflected in Mary’s life. Her example encourages believers to imitate this attitude in their own relationships.
The Measure of Charity
Scripture also reminds us that the way we treat others matters deeply:
“Give, and it will be given to you… for the measure you give will be the measure you get back” (Luke 6:38).
This teaching highlights the importance of generosity and sincerity in our actions. Charity is not about calculation, but about openness of heart.
The Witness of the Saints
Many saints have emphasized the importance of charity in the Christian life. They remind us that acts of kindness and generosity are expressions of love for God.
Helping those in need, offering support, and living with compassion are all ways of participating in this virtue.
Learning from Mary
Mary’s charity teaches us to:
- Be attentive to the needs of others
- Act with generosity and humility
- Serve without seeking recognition
- Trust God in all things
Her life shows that charity is not limited to great actions, but is lived out in daily faithfulness.
Reflection
Charity is at the heart of the Christian life. It is the expression of love in action — a love that reflects God’s own generosity.
Mary’s example invites us to grow in this virtue, not through grand gestures alone, but through consistent acts of kindness and care.
By following her example, we learn to love more deeply — both God and those around us.
Prayer
O Mary, Mother of Perpetual Help,
teach us to love as you loved.
Help us to recognize the needs of others
and to respond with generosity and compassion.
Guide us to grow in charity each day,
so that our lives may reflect God’s love.
Amen.
