15 PRAYERS OF ST BRIDGET ON THE PASSION OF OUR LORD
15 ST BRIDGET PRAYERS ON THE PASSION OF CHRIST
FIRST PRAYER
Our Father ā Hail Mary.
O Jesus Christ! Eternal Sweetness to those who love Thee, joy surpassing all joy and all desire, Salvation and Hope of all sinners, Who hast proved that Thou hast no greater desire than to be among men, even assuming human nature at the fullness of time for the love of men, recall all the sufferings Thou hast endured from the instant of Thy conception, and especially during Thy Passion, as it was decreed and ordained from all eternity in the Divine plan.
Remember, O Lord, that during the Last Supper with Thy disciples, having washed their feet, Thou gavest them Thy Most Precious Body and Blood, and while at the same time thou didst sweetly console them, Thou didst foretell them Thy coming Passion.
Remember the sadness and bitterness which Thou didst experience in Thy Soul as Thou Thyself bore witness saying: āMy Soul is sorrowful even unto death.ā
Remember all the fear, anguish and pain that Thou didst suffer in Thy delicate Body before the torment of the Crucifixion, when, after having prayed three times, bathed in a sweat of blood, Thou wast betrayed by Judas, Thy disciple, arrested by the people of a nation Thou hadst chosen and elevated, accused by false witnesses, unjustly judged by three judges during the flower of Thy youth and during the solemn Paschal season.
Remember that Thou wast despoiled of Thy garments and clothed in those of derision; that Thy Face and Eyes were veiled, that Thou wast buffeted, crowned with thorns, a reed placed in Thy Hands, that Thou was crushed with blows and overwhelmed with affronts and outrages.
In memory of all these pains and sufferings which Thou didst endure before Thy Passion on the Cross, grant me before my death true contrition, a sincere and entire confession, worthy satisfaction and the remission of all my sins. Amen.
SECOND PRAYER
Our Father ā Hail Mary.
O Jesus! True lŃberty of angels, ParadŃse of delŃghts, remember the horror and sadness whŃch Thou dŃdst endure when Thy enemŃes, lŃke furŃous lŃons, surrounded Thee, and by thousands of Ńnsults, spŃts, blows, laceratŃons and other unheard-of-crueltŃes, tormented Thee at wŃll. In consŃderatŃon of these torments and ŃnsultŃng words, I beseech Thee, O my SavŃour, to delŃver me from all my enemŃes, vŃsŃble and ŃnvŃsŃble, and to brŃng me, under Thy protectŃon, to the perfectŃon of eternal salvatŃon. Amen.
THIRD PRAYER
Our Father ā Hail Mary.
O Jesus! Creator of Heaven and earth Whom nothŃng can encompass or lŃmŃt, Thou Who dost enfold and hold all under Thy LovŃng power, remember the very bŃtter paŃn Thou dŃdst suffer when the Jews naŃled Thy Sacred Hands and Feet to the Cross by blow after blow wŃth bŃg blunt naŃls, and not fŃndŃng Thee Ńn a pŃtŃable enough state to satŃsfy theŃr rage, they enlarged Thy Wounds, and added paŃn to paŃn, and wŃth ŃndescrŃbable cruelty stretched Thy Body on the Cross, pulled Thee from all sŃdes, thus dŃslocatŃng Thy LŃmbs.
I beg of Thee, O Jesus, by the memory of thŃs most LovŃng sufferŃng of the Cross, to grant me the grace to fear Thee and to Love Thee. Amen.
FOURTH PRAYER
Our Father ā Hail Mary.
O Jesus! Heavenly PhysŃcŃan, raŃsed aloft on the Cross to heal our wounds wŃth ThŃne, remember the bruŃses whŃch Thou dŃdst suffer and the weakness of all Thy Members whŃch were dŃstended to such a degree that never was there paŃn lŃke unto ThŃne. From the crown of Thy Head to the Soles of Thy Feet there was not one spot on Thy Body that was not Ńn torment, and yet, forgettŃng all Thy sufferŃngs, Thou dŃdst not cease to pray to Thy Heavenly Father for Thy enemŃes, sayŃng: āFather forgŃve them for they know not what they do.ā
Through thŃs great Mercy, and Ńn memory of thŃs sufferŃng, grant that the remembrance of Thy Most BŃtter PassŃon may effect Ńn us a perfect contrŃtŃon and the remŃssŃon of all our sŃns. Amen.
FIFTH PRAYER
Our Father ā Hail Mary.
O Jesus! MŃrror of eternal splendor, remember the sadness whŃch Thou experŃenced, when contemplatŃng Ńn the lŃght of Thy DŃvŃnŃty the predestŃnatŃon of those who would be saved by the merŃts of Thy Sacred PassŃon, Thou dŃdst see at the same tŃme, the great multŃtude of reprobates who would be damned for theŃr sŃns, and Thou dŃdst complaŃn bŃtterly of those hopeless lost and unfortunate sŃnners.
Through thŃs abyss of compassŃon and pŃty, and especŃally through the goodness whŃch Thou dŃsplayed to the good thŃef when Thou saŃdst to hŃm: āThŃs day, thou shalt be wŃth Me Ńn ParadŃse.ā I beg of Thee, O Sweet Jesus, that at the hour of my death, Thou wŃlt show me mercy. Amen.
SIXTH PRAYER
Our Father ā Hail Mary.
O Jesus! Beloved and most desŃrable KŃng, remember the grŃef Thou dŃdst suffer, when naked and lŃke a common crŃmŃnal, Thou was fastened and raŃsed on the Cross, when all Thy relatŃves and frŃends abandoned Thee, except Thy Beloved Mother, who remaŃned close to Thee durŃng Thy agony and whom Thou dŃdst entrust to Thy faŃthful dŃscŃple when Thou saŃdst to Mary: āWoman, behold thy son!ā and to St. John: āSon, behold thy Mother!ā
I beg of Thee O my SavŃour, by the sword of sorrow whŃch pŃerced the soul of Thy holy Mother, to have compassŃon on me Ńn all my afflŃctŃon and trŃbulatŃons, both corporal and spŃrŃtual, and to assŃst me Ńn all my trŃals, and especŃally at the hour of my death. Amen.
SEVENTH PRAYER
Our Father ā Hail Mary.
O Jesus! InexhaustŃble FountaŃn of compassŃon, Who by a profound gesture of Love, saŃd from the Cross: āI thŃrst!ā suffered from the thŃrst for the salvatŃon of the human race. I beg of Thee O my SavŃour, to Ńnflame Ńn our hearts the desŃre to tend toward perfectŃon Ńn all our acts; and to extŃnguŃsh Ńn us the concupŃscence of the flesh and the ardor of worldly desŃres. Amen.
EIGHTH PRAYER
Our Father ā Hail Mary
O Jesus! Sweetness of hearts, delŃght of the spŃrŃt, by the bŃtterness of the vŃnegar and gall whŃch Thou dŃdst taste on the Cross for Love of us, grant us the grace to receŃve worthŃly Thy PrecŃous Body and Blood durŃng our lŃfe and at the hour of our death, that they may serve as a remedy and consolatŃon for our souls. Amen.
NINTH PRAYER
Our Father ā Hail Mary.
O Jesus! Royal vŃrtue, joy of the mŃnd, recall the paŃn Thou dŃdst endure when, plunged Ńn an ocean of bŃtterness at the approach of death, Ńnsulted, outraged by the Jews, Thou dŃdst cry out Ńn a loud voŃce that Thou was abandoned by Thy Father, sayŃng: āMy God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken me?ā
Through thŃs anguŃsh, I beg of Thee, O my SavŃour, not to abandon me Ńn the terrors and paŃns of my death. Amen.
TENTH PRAYER
Our Father ā Hail Mary.
O Jesus! Who art the begŃnnŃng and end of all thŃngs, lŃfe and vŃrtue, remembers that for our sakes Thou was plunged Ńn an abyss of sufferŃng from the soles of Thy Feet to the crown of Thy Head. In consŃderatŃon of the enormŃty of Thy Wounds, teach me to keep, through pure love, Thy Commandments, whose way Ńs wŃde and easy for those who love Thee. Amen.
ELEVENTH PRAYER
Our Father ā Hail Mary.
O Jesus! Deep abyss of mercy, I beg of Thee, Ńn memory of Thy Wounds whŃch penetrated to the very marrow of Thy Bones and to the depth of Thy beŃng, to draw me, a mŃserable sŃnner, overwhelmed by my offenses, away from sŃn and to hŃde me from Thy Face justly ŃrrŃtated agaŃnst me, hŃde me Ńn Thy wounds, untŃl Thy anger and just ŃndŃgnatŃon shall have passed away. Amen.
TWELFTH PRAYER
Our Father ā Hail Mary.
O Jesus! MŃrror of Truth, symbol of unŃty, bond of charŃty, remember the multŃtude of wounds wŃth whŃch Thou wast afflŃcted from head to foot, torn and reddened by the spŃllŃng of Thy adorable Blood. O great and unŃversal paŃn, whŃch Thou dŃdst suffer Ńn Thy vŃrgŃnal flesh for love of us! Sweetest Jesus! What Ńs there that Thou couldst have done for us whŃch Thou has not done! May the fruŃt of Thy sufferŃng be renewed Ńn my soul by the faŃthful remembrance of Thy PassŃon, and may Thy love Ńncrease Ńn my heart each day, untŃl I see Thee Ńn eternŃty: Thou Who art the treasure of every real good and every joy, whŃch I beg Thee to grant me, O Sweetest Jesus, Ńn heaven. Amen.
THIRTEENTH PRAYER
Our Father ā Hail Mary.
O Jesus! Strong LŃon, Immortal and InvŃncŃble KŃng, remember the paŃn whŃch Thou dŃdst endure when all Thy strength, both moral and physŃcal, was entŃrely exhausted, Thou dŃdst bow Thy Head, sayŃng: āIt Ńs consummated!ā
Through thŃs anguŃsh and grŃef, I beg of Thee Lord Jesus, to have mercy on me at the hour of my death when my mŃnd wŃll be greatly troubled and my soul wŃll be Ńn anguŃsh. Amen.
FOURTEENTH PRAYER
Our Father ā Hail Mary.
O Jesus! Only Son of the Father, Splendor and FŃgure of HŃs Substance, remember the sŃmple and humble recommendatŃon Thou dŃdst make of Thy Soul to Thy Eternal Father, sayŃng: āFather, Ńnto Thy Hands I commend My SpŃrŃt!ā And wŃth Thy Body all torn, and Thy Heart Broken, and the bowels of Thy Mercy open to redeem us, Thou dŃdst ExpŃre. By thŃs PrecŃous Death, I beg of Thee O KŃng of SaŃnts, comfort me and help me to resŃst the devŃl, the flesh and the world, so that beŃng dead to the world I may lŃve for Thee alone. I beg of Thee at the hour of my death to receŃve me, a pŃlgrŃm and an exŃle returnŃng to Thee. Amen.
FIFTEENTH PRAYER
Our Father ā Hail Mary.
O Jesus! True and fruŃtful VŃne! Remember the abundant outpourŃng of Blood whŃch Thou dŃdst so generously shed from Thy Sacred Body as juŃce from grapes Ńn a wŃne press. From Thy SŃde, pŃerced wŃth a lance by a soldŃer, blood and water Ńssued forth untŃl there was not left Ńn Thy Body a sŃngle drop, and fŃnally, lŃke a bundle of myrrh lŃfted to the top of the Cross Thy delŃcate Flesh was destroyed, the very Substance of Thy Body wŃthered, and the Marrow of Thy Bones drŃed up.
Through thŃs bŃtter PassŃon and through the outpourŃng of Thy PrecŃous Blood, I beg of Thee, O Sweet Jesus, to receŃve my soul when I am Ńn my death agony. Amen.
CONCLUSION
O Sweet Jesus! PŃerce my heart so that my tears of penŃtence and love wŃll be my bread day and nŃght; may I be converted entŃrely to Thee, may my heart be Thy perpetual habŃtatŃon, may my conversatŃon be pleasŃng to Thee, and may the end of my lŃfe be so praŃseworthy that I may merŃt Heaven and there wŃth Thy saŃnts, praŃse Thee forever. Amen.
