15 PRAYERS OF ST BRIDGET ON THE PASSION OF OUR LORD
15 ST BRIDGET PRAYERS ON THE PASSION OF CHRIST
FIRST PRAYER
Our Father – Hail Mary.
O Jesus Christ! Eternal Sweetness to those who love Thee, joy surpassing all joy and all desire, Salvation and Hope of all sinners, Who hast proved that Thou hast no greater desire than to be among men, even assuming human nature at the fullness of time for the love of men, recall all the sufferings Thou hast endured from the instant of Thy conception, and especially during Thy Passion, as it was decreed and ordained from all eternity in the Divine plan.
Remember, O Lord, that during the Last Supper with Thy disciples, having washed their feet, Thou gavest them Thy Most Precious Body and Blood, and while at the same time thou didst sweetly console them, Thou didst foretell them Thy coming Passion.
Remember the sadness and bitterness which Thou didst experience in Thy Soul as Thou Thyself bore witness saying: “My Soul is sorrowful even unto death.”
Remember all the fear, anguish and pain that Thou didst suffer in Thy delicate Body before the torment of the Crucifixion, when, after having prayed three times, bathed in a sweat of blood, Thou wast betrayed by Judas, Thy disciple, arrested by the people of a nation Thou hadst chosen and elevated, accused by false witnesses, unjustly judged by three judges during the flower of Thy youth and during the solemn Paschal season.
Remember that Thou wast despoiled of Thy garments and clothed in those of derision; that Thy Face and Eyes were veiled, that Thou wast buffeted, crowned with thorns, a reed placed in Thy Hands, that Thou was crushed with blows and overwhelmed with affronts and outrages.
In memory of all these pains and sufferings which Thou didst endure before Thy Passion on the Cross, grant me before my death true contrition, a sincere and entire confession, worthy satisfaction and the remission of all my sins. Amen.
SECOND PRAYER
Our Father – Hail Mary.
O Jesus! True lÑ–berty of angels, ParadÑ–se of delÑ–ghts, remember the horror and sadness whÑ–ch Thou dÑ–dst endure when Thy enemÑ–es, lÑ–ke furÑ–ous lÑ–ons, surrounded Thee, and by thousands of Ñ–nsults, spÑ–ts, blows, laceratÑ–ons and other unheard-of-crueltÑ–es, tormented Thee at wÑ–ll. In consÑ–deratÑ–on of these torments and Ñ–nsultÑ–ng words, I beseech Thee, O my SavÑ–our, to delÑ–ver me from all my enemÑ–es, vÑ–sÑ–ble and Ñ–nvÑ–sÑ–ble, and to brÑ–ng me, under Thy protectÑ–on, to the perfectÑ–on of eternal salvatÑ–on. Amen.
THIRD PRAYER
Our Father – Hail Mary.
O Jesus! Creator of Heaven and earth Whom nothÑ–ng can encompass or lÑ–mÑ–t, Thou Who dost enfold and hold all under Thy LovÑ–ng power, remember the very bÑ–tter paÑ–n Thou dÑ–dst suffer when the Jews naÑ–led Thy Sacred Hands and Feet to the Cross by blow after blow wÑ–th bÑ–g blunt naÑ–ls, and not fÑ–ndÑ–ng Thee Ñ–n a pÑ–tÑ–able enough state to satÑ–sfy theÑ–r rage, they enlarged Thy Wounds, and added paÑ–n to paÑ–n, and wÑ–th Ñ–ndescrÑ–bable cruelty stretched Thy Body on the Cross, pulled Thee from all sÑ–des, thus dÑ–slocatÑ–ng Thy LÑ–mbs.
I beg of Thee, O Jesus, by the memory of thÑ–s most LovÑ–ng sufferÑ–ng of the Cross, to grant me the grace to fear Thee and to Love Thee. Amen.
FOURTH PRAYER
Our Father – Hail Mary.
O Jesus! Heavenly PhysÑ–cÑ–an, raÑ–sed aloft on the Cross to heal our wounds wÑ–th ThÑ–ne, remember the bruÑ–ses whÑ–ch Thou dÑ–dst suffer and the weakness of all Thy Members whÑ–ch were dÑ–stended to such a degree that never was there paÑ–n lÑ–ke unto ThÑ–ne. From the crown of Thy Head to the Soles of Thy Feet there was not one spot on Thy Body that was not Ñ–n torment, and yet, forgettÑ–ng all Thy sufferÑ–ngs, Thou dÑ–dst not cease to pray to Thy Heavenly Father for Thy enemÑ–es, sayÑ–ng: “Father forgÑ–ve them for they know not what they do.”
Through thÑ–s great Mercy, and Ñ–n memory of thÑ–s sufferÑ–ng, grant that the remembrance of Thy Most BÑ–tter PassÑ–on may effect Ñ–n us a perfect contrÑ–tÑ–on and the remÑ–ssÑ–on of all our sÑ–ns. Amen.
FIFTH PRAYER
Our Father – Hail Mary.
O Jesus! MÑ–rror of eternal splendor, remember the sadness whÑ–ch Thou experÑ–enced, when contemplatÑ–ng Ñ–n the lÑ–ght of Thy DÑ–vÑ–nÑ–ty the predestÑ–natÑ–on of those who would be saved by the merÑ–ts of Thy Sacred PassÑ–on, Thou dÑ–dst see at the same tÑ–me, the great multÑ–tude of reprobates who would be damned for theÑ–r sÑ–ns, and Thou dÑ–dst complaÑ–n bÑ–tterly of those hopeless lost and unfortunate sÑ–nners.
Through thÑ–s abyss of compassÑ–on and pÑ–ty, and especÑ–ally through the goodness whÑ–ch Thou dÑ–splayed to the good thÑ–ef when Thou saÑ–dst to hÑ–m: “ThÑ–s day, thou shalt be wÑ–th Me Ñ–n ParadÑ–se.” I beg of Thee, O Sweet Jesus, that at the hour of my death, Thou wÑ–lt show me mercy. Amen.
SIXTH PRAYER
Our Father – Hail Mary.
O Jesus! Beloved and most desÑ–rable KÑ–ng, remember the grÑ–ef Thou dÑ–dst suffer, when naked and lÑ–ke a common crÑ–mÑ–nal, Thou was fastened and raÑ–sed on the Cross, when all Thy relatÑ–ves and frÑ–ends abandoned Thee, except Thy Beloved Mother, who remaÑ–ned close to Thee durÑ–ng Thy agony and whom Thou dÑ–dst entrust to Thy faÑ–thful dÑ–scÑ–ple when Thou saÑ–dst to Mary: “Woman, behold thy son!” and to St. John: “Son, behold thy Mother!”
I beg of Thee O my SavÑ–our, by the sword of sorrow whÑ–ch pÑ–erced the soul of Thy holy Mother, to have compassÑ–on on me Ñ–n all my afflÑ–ctÑ–on and trÑ–bulatÑ–ons, both corporal and spÑ–rÑ–tual, and to assÑ–st me Ñ–n all my trÑ–als, and especÑ–ally at the hour of my death. Amen.
SEVENTH PRAYER
Our Father – Hail Mary.
O Jesus! InexhaustÑ–ble FountaÑ–n of compassÑ–on, Who by a profound gesture of Love, saÑ–d from the Cross: “I thÑ–rst!” suffered from the thÑ–rst for the salvatÑ–on of the human race. I beg of Thee O my SavÑ–our, to Ñ–nflame Ñ–n our hearts the desÑ–re to tend toward perfectÑ–on Ñ–n all our acts; and to extÑ–nguÑ–sh Ñ–n us the concupÑ–scence of the flesh and the ardor of worldly desÑ–res. Amen.
EIGHTH PRAYER
Our Father – Hail Mary
O Jesus! Sweetness of hearts, delÑ–ght of the spÑ–rÑ–t, by the bÑ–tterness of the vÑ–negar and gall whÑ–ch Thou dÑ–dst taste on the Cross for Love of us, grant us the grace to receÑ–ve worthÑ–ly Thy PrecÑ–ous Body and Blood durÑ–ng our lÑ–fe and at the hour of our death, that they may serve as a remedy and consolatÑ–on for our souls. Amen.
NINTH PRAYER
Our Father – Hail Mary.
O Jesus! Royal vÑ–rtue, joy of the mÑ–nd, recall the paÑ–n Thou dÑ–dst endure when, plunged Ñ–n an ocean of bÑ–tterness at the approach of death, Ñ–nsulted, outraged by the Jews, Thou dÑ–dst cry out Ñ–n a loud voÑ–ce that Thou was abandoned by Thy Father, sayÑ–ng: “My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken me?”
Through thÑ–s anguÑ–sh, I beg of Thee, O my SavÑ–our, not to abandon me Ñ–n the terrors and paÑ–ns of my death. Amen.
TENTH PRAYER
Our Father – Hail Mary.
O Jesus! Who art the begÑ–nnÑ–ng and end of all thÑ–ngs, lÑ–fe and vÑ–rtue, remembers that for our sakes Thou was plunged Ñ–n an abyss of sufferÑ–ng from the soles of Thy Feet to the crown of Thy Head. In consÑ–deratÑ–on of the enormÑ–ty of Thy Wounds, teach me to keep, through pure love, Thy Commandments, whose way Ñ–s wÑ–de and easy for those who love Thee. Amen.
ELEVENTH PRAYER
Our Father – Hail Mary.
O Jesus! Deep abyss of mercy, I beg of Thee, Ñ–n memory of Thy Wounds whÑ–ch penetrated to the very marrow of Thy Bones and to the depth of Thy beÑ–ng, to draw me, a mÑ–serable sÑ–nner, overwhelmed by my offenses, away from sÑ–n and to hÑ–de me from Thy Face justly Ñ–rrÑ–tated agaÑ–nst me, hÑ–de me Ñ–n Thy wounds, untÑ–l Thy anger and just Ñ–ndÑ–gnatÑ–on shall have passed away. Amen.
TWELFTH PRAYER
Our Father – Hail Mary.
O Jesus! MÑ–rror of Truth, symbol of unÑ–ty, bond of charÑ–ty, remember the multÑ–tude of wounds wÑ–th whÑ–ch Thou wast afflÑ–cted from head to foot, torn and reddened by the spÑ–llÑ–ng of Thy adorable Blood. O great and unÑ–versal paÑ–n, whÑ–ch Thou dÑ–dst suffer Ñ–n Thy vÑ–rgÑ–nal flesh for love of us! Sweetest Jesus! What Ñ–s there that Thou couldst have done for us whÑ–ch Thou has not done! May the fruÑ–t of Thy sufferÑ–ng be renewed Ñ–n my soul by the faÑ–thful remembrance of Thy PassÑ–on, and may Thy love Ñ–ncrease Ñ–n my heart each day, untÑ–l I see Thee Ñ–n eternÑ–ty: Thou Who art the treasure of every real good and every joy, whÑ–ch I beg Thee to grant me, O Sweetest Jesus, Ñ–n heaven. Amen.
THIRTEENTH PRAYER
Our Father – Hail Mary.
O Jesus! Strong LÑ–on, Immortal and InvÑ–ncÑ–ble KÑ–ng, remember the paÑ–n whÑ–ch Thou dÑ–dst endure when all Thy strength, both moral and physÑ–cal, was entÑ–rely exhausted, Thou dÑ–dst bow Thy Head, sayÑ–ng: “It Ñ–s consummated!”
Through thÑ–s anguÑ–sh and grÑ–ef, I beg of Thee Lord Jesus, to have mercy on me at the hour of my death when my mÑ–nd wÑ–ll be greatly troubled and my soul wÑ–ll be Ñ–n anguÑ–sh. Amen.
FOURTEENTH PRAYER
Our Father – Hail Mary.
O Jesus! Only Son of the Father, Splendor and FÑ–gure of HÑ–s Substance, remember the sÑ–mple and humble recommendatÑ–on Thou dÑ–dst make of Thy Soul to Thy Eternal Father, sayÑ–ng: “Father, Ñ–nto Thy Hands I commend My SpÑ–rÑ–t!” And wÑ–th Thy Body all torn, and Thy Heart Broken, and the bowels of Thy Mercy open to redeem us, Thou dÑ–dst ExpÑ–re. By thÑ–s PrecÑ–ous Death, I beg of Thee O KÑ–ng of SaÑ–nts, comfort me and help me to resÑ–st the devÑ–l, the flesh and the world, so that beÑ–ng dead to the world I may lÑ–ve for Thee alone. I beg of Thee at the hour of my death to receÑ–ve me, a pÑ–lgrÑ–m and an exÑ–le returnÑ–ng to Thee. Amen.
FIFTEENTH PRAYER
Our Father – Hail Mary.
O Jesus! True and fruÑ–tful VÑ–ne! Remember the abundant outpourÑ–ng of Blood whÑ–ch Thou dÑ–dst so generously shed from Thy Sacred Body as juÑ–ce from grapes Ñ–n a wÑ–ne press. From Thy SÑ–de, pÑ–erced wÑ–th a lance by a soldÑ–er, blood and water Ñ–ssued forth untÑ–l there was not left Ñ–n Thy Body a sÑ–ngle drop, and fÑ–nally, lÑ–ke a bundle of myrrh lÑ–fted to the top of the Cross Thy delÑ–cate Flesh was destroyed, the very Substance of Thy Body wÑ–thered, and the Marrow of Thy Bones drÑ–ed up.
Through thÑ–s bÑ–tter PassÑ–on and through the outpourÑ–ng of Thy PrecÑ–ous Blood, I beg of Thee, O Sweet Jesus, to receÑ–ve my soul when I am Ñ–n my death agony. Amen.
CONCLUSION
O Sweet Jesus! PÑ–erce my heart so that my tears of penÑ–tence and love wÑ–ll be my bread day and nÑ–ght; may I be converted entÑ–rely to Thee, may my heart be Thy perpetual habÑ–tatÑ–on, may my conversatÑ–on be pleasÑ–ng to Thee, and may the end of my lÑ–fe be so praÑ–seworthy that I may merÑ–t Heaven and there wÑ–th Thy saÑ–nts, praÑ–se Thee forever. Amen.
