A Reflection on Purity and Divine Charity

Where there is true purity of heart, there is also a deeper capacity for love. A heart that is free from self-seeking becomes more open to God, and the more it is emptied of self, the more it can be filled with divine charity.

In the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary, this truth is revealed in a remarkable way. Because her heart was entirely pure and humble, it was completely open to God. For this reason, spiritual writers have often referred to her as the “Queen of Love.”

A Heart Filled with Divine Love

The saints frequently reflect on the greatness of Mary’s love for God. Her charity is described as surpassing that of all other creatures, not as a comparison meant to exclude others, but to highlight the unique fullness of grace she received.

Her love was not divided or distracted. It was whole, steady, and entirely directed toward God.

Mary loved:

  • With her whole heart
  • With her whole soul
  • With her whole strength

Her life reflects the commandment to love God completely, lived out in a perfect and continuous way.

Purity as the Foundation of Love

Mary’s purity was not simply an external condition, but an interior freedom. Her heart was not attached to earthly distractions in a way that would draw her away from God.

Because of this, her soul was fully disposed to receive divine love. Spiritual writers describe this love as something that filled her entirely, leaving no part untouched.

Her purity allowed her to love God without division, with a clarity and intensity that shaped her entire life.

A Soul Transformed by Love

Some saints use the image of fire to describe this love. Just as fire penetrates and transforms iron, so divine love filled and transformed Mary’s soul.

This imagery expresses a deep spiritual truth: love of God is not merely an emotion, but a transforming presence. It shapes the way a person thinks, acts, and lives.

Mary’s union with God was rooted in this love. Her life was not separate from God, but continually oriented toward Him.

A Life of Continuous Love

Unlike the way we often think of prayer as moments set apart, Mary’s life suggests something deeper — a continual turning toward God.

Her love was not limited to certain times or actions. It was present in:

  • Prayer
  • Silence
  • Work
  • Daily responsibilities

Everything she did was carried out in a spirit of love.

Even while fulfilling ordinary duties, her heart remained united to God. Her external activity did not interrupt her interior life; rather, both were harmoniously united.

Love in Action and Contemplation

Mary’s life shows a beautiful balance between action and contemplation. She was attentive to daily responsibilities, yet inwardly focused on God.

As some spiritual writers suggest, even when her body rested, her soul remained attentive to God’s presence.

This teaches us that love of God is not limited by activity. It can be lived out in every moment, even in the simplest tasks.

A Call to Love God More Deeply

Because Mary’s life was so filled with love for God, she invites others to grow in that same love. Her example encourages believers to seek a deeper relationship with God — not out of obligation, but out of love.

To follow her example is to:

  • Desire God above all else
  • Grow in purity of heart
  • Seek Him in daily life
  • Love Him with sincerity and trust

Reflection

Mary’s life reminds us that the greatest love is a love that is pure, undivided, and centered on God.

Her example invites us to examine our own hearts:

  • What fills our thoughts?
  • What directs our desires?
  • Where do we place our trust?

As we grow in simplicity and openness, our capacity to love also grows.

Prayer

O Mary, Queen of Love,
your heart was wholly given to God.
Teach us to love Him more deeply
and to seek Him above all things.
Help us to grow in purity of heart
so that we may reflect His love in our lives.
